Salvation Army Bell Ringer

Aiken police and the Salvation Army are asking residents of Aiken to be aware of a shyster posing as a bell ringer collecting money for the needy but keeping it for himself.

A man was said to be standing outside of the Food Lion on Richland this week swinging a bell around collecting cash in a jar, but has no ties to the Salvation Army. He apparently stole the iconic red apron and bell and went to work for himself.

An employee of SA witnessed the man and asked him why he was collecting the money in a jar in lieu of the usual red kettle. He said someone stole it while he went to use the bathroom. A boldfaced lie, because SA collects the buckets at the end of every shift and none were reported missing. She then reported the man to police and to the organization.

Unfortunately, the man got away with some money and became another example of holiday thievery. If you plan to donate this holiday season, make sure the source is reputable and the cause is just. Anyone with information about the fake Salvation Army suspect is asked to call Public Safety at 642-7620.

Aiken Police are on the lookout for a man responsible for a weekend shooting in downtown Aiken.

The 46 year old victim of Aiken says a man jumped into the bed of his pickup truck late Sunday and fired a round into the cabin. The man was wearing a black mask and a dark cape when he shot at the man at the intersection of Greenville Street and Barnwell Avenue.

The shooter held on as the victim drove away, swerving back and forth to throw the man off the truck. His back window was shattered as he fired a round before finally falling off. Police noticed the man swerving and assumed he was impaired, becoming more suspicious as the man refused to stop.

When he finally stopped, police held him to the ground and noticed the shattered window and blood dripping from his shoulder. He was treated at the scene for a superficial wound.

Witnesses told police that they heard gunfire, but no leads have been given as to the identity of the shooter.

If you have any information that could lead to the apprehension of the suspect, call Aiken Public Safety at 642-7620.

Trick-or-Treating to Go As Planned in Aiken on Sunday

Sunday trick-or-treating will still commence as planned in Aiken.

There is some confusion as to whether or not kids can go door to door since Halloween falls on a Sunday this year – in previous years,  kids were asked to do their rounds on the day before due to police not being in force on that day. To avert confusion, Aiken police have given the green light for kids to do their ghoulish work on Sunday. However, the city of Jackson asks kids to do it on Saturday.

As a reminder, Aiken authorities stress the importance of safety. Respect the privacy of those who aren’t giving out candy, make sure kids are fed a meal before trick-or-treating, and supervise them. Public safety will be in force to smooth things along, and traffic will be blocked off into Gatewood for the freakish night.
