Aiken, South Carolina
Aiken is a city in Aiken County, South Carolina, with a population estimated at over 25,337 residents. It is the county seat of Aiken County and a campus site of the University of South Carolina Aiken. The median income for a household in the city is around $44,172, and the median income for a family is $56,033.
In the late 1800s and the first part of the 1900s, Aiken served as a winter playground for many of the country's wealthiest families such the Vanderbilts, Bostwicks, and the Whitneys. The city has a rich equine historical tradition, with a number of its streets named after famous thoroughbred horses, races and racing venues.
Aiken was recognized with the All-America City Award in 1997 by the National Civic League, and has been featured in a number of magazines because of its grand old houses, beautiful horses and special downtown atmosphere. The Aiken region is a popular destination for retirees.
