At Last…Clipperdom Rests!
The Clippers’ situation – ‘Clipperdom’ – has basically been going on so long with so many completely unbelievable statements since this all began, that it began to feel like its own supernatural location: Stephen King’s, Under the…Clipperdom.
However, it finally seems that this slightly ridiculous situation is settled. The former CEO of Microsoft is basically happy as a clam. He is heading to Los Angeles to party it up with fans, players and coaches at the Staples Center this coming week because, yes, he is the new, proud owner of the Los Angeles Clippers. According to the NBA and the courts, the sale went through, and will stay as it is, no matter what petitions are filed by Sterling or Sterling’s lawyers.
Staples Center will be all the rage as Ballmer thanks everyone for their support and revels in the TWO BILLION dollar purchase he just made. (Almost as much as Cleveland is paying to get their bad boy LeBron back, aye?) Now, is a sports team worth this amount? According to Ballmer they are, and he not only worked to purchase this team from the court-ordered confirmed previous co-owner Shelly Sterling, but he also came out of the pack of other celebrities and Hollywood hotshots who also wanted to become Clippers’ owners.
For nearly four months, Clippers’ owner Donald Sterling has fought to keep control of the team he has been the ‘top nut’ at for over thirty years. But because of his complete wrong words and doings, a judge passed down the team to Sterling’s estranged wife, Sherry, allowing her free reign to sell it to Ballmer outright. (This puts a whole new twist on ‘estranged’ I have a feeling).
Ballmer’s lawyer, Adam Streisand, said this agreement to sell was finalized extremely fast by the judge. Chances are, the courts just wanted this ridiculous case to go away. And within minutes after Sherry was given control to sell, the deal with Ballmer was “…signed, sealed and delivered,” Streisand remarked.
But Donald Sterling did not disappear into that goodnight. It was only hours after the announcement of the sale that Sterling petitioned an appeals court to overturn the move.
His filing spoke of how the sale needed to be stopped and reviewed because of the “erroneous legal determinations made here, and to restore public faith in our justice system.” Public faith is already wavering and mostly it’s because the big guys in Congress can’t do their jobs, not because of a basketball owner who basically did this to himself.
Did the court halt the sale for review? Nope. As of Wednesday, the court said forget about it, and ‘Clipperdom’ was officially over.
Sterling, and supporters, will keep yapping about ‘freedom of speech, and how on earth anyone can have their personal assets taken away because of something they said in the privacy of their own homes’. While Shelly, on the other hand, is positively glowing. She received not only two billion dollars, but also the cutesy titles of: “Clippers Number One Fan” and “owner emeritus”, in addition to many perks that include game tickets.
The players are happy and have spoken out positively about the purchase. And, let’s face it, if you want the loudest, most excited, bubbliest guy in the world who absolutely LOVES you and your team – than L.A. definitely got the right man for the job!
There’s just one more interesting point left: It will be interesting to see if this renewed energy and new owner brings the Clippers the ultimate success this year. After all, LeBron is still out there with his new/old team, and he has something to prove as well. And if the Clippers don’t do well…you’ll never hear the end of Donald Sterling’s comments.
The saga continues…
